What Drives You, Is It Aspiration or Inspiration?

As an emerging leader, what drives you to lead, is it aspiration or is it inspiration?

If it’s aspiration, you’ll lead with a me-centric mindset—it’s all about me. If it’s inspiration, you’ll lead with an others-focused mindset—setting others up for success.

In his bestselling book, Motive, Patrick Lencioni, describes these two approaches as reward and responsibility. He says, if you base your leadership on rewards, you’ll do all you can to look out for yourself, not for those you lead. But if you see your position as one of responsibility, you’ll go the extra-mile to serve your followers instead of waiting on them to serve you.

We Help Leaders Expand Their Emotional Intelligence

"If it’s aspiration, you’ll lead with a me-centric mindset—it’s all about me. If it’s inspiration, you’ll lead with an others-focused mindset—setting others up for success."

So, as you eye that leadership role, it would be in your best interest to identify your “Why.” Why do you want to be the leader?

While you can change your leadership approach from one of reward/aspiration to one of responsibility/inspiration, knowing what drives you from the outset will make it easier for you to chart your leadership path.
